Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom has a few other problems. And at one point, at the party that ends the novel, Lucas stares at the crowd trying to identify people along a gender binary, but is sudden sensitive to trans kids a few pages later. Unrelated to the book, but that scene from Deathly Hallows Part 1 is my favorite and least favorite part of that movie.

Okay, end rant. They can be interpreted either way. I went to my prom. I went to one dance as a kid, and quickly realized that it was not the environment for me.
The fact that prom tickets cost more than our discount Six Flags tickets was also a factor. Really insightful review, as always.
