While Annie and Adam read about the du Mauriers in the past, for the reader, these events are still happening. Similarly, many of the upper-class characters in the past try to ignore the struggles of the poor, but an immigrant woman's desperate attempts to save her sick brother and accounts of sexual abuse in a Chinese work camp bring everything close to home--not to incriminate the reader, but just to tell a story that wouldn't have been told otherwise. This is really a book that stays with you.
The plot is intriguing and kept me engaged from beginning to end. When a new restaurant that a woman has opened in a building she inherited is overrun by FBI agents on its opening night and a long buried body is found, it starts the owner on a quest to find out who it is. Her research leads her to speak with a professor who turns out to be the friend of a man whose son has been kidnapped. The story goes back and forth between turn of the century and present day unravelling two parallel storylines that are both well written and compelling.
When seven-year-old Ethan du Maurier, only son and heir of New York City real estate tycoon, Alexander du Maurier, disappears during school recess, the FBI quickly determines that his disappearance was an abduction. Like all English villages, the quiet and charming Thorpe Amberley in the heart of the Suffolk countryside has its secrets, its mysteries and its legends. It also has its traditions, such as the Tamberley Morris Men, a dysfunctional band of blow-ins, mainly professionals, who rehearse every Thursday and drink in the local pub. Nothing much has served to disturb the tranquillity of Thorpe Amberley for centuries. A stunningly beautiful American woman comes to the village to teach at a nearby school, and her arrival coincides with the resurrection of deadly seeds of jealousy, evil and murder.
When the village is rocked by a series of gruesome and apparently ritualistic killings, it soon becomes clear that the local police are up against dark forces which they are wholly unequipped to deal with. A hunt for not one, but two serial killers, is on, and Thorpe Amberley will never be the same again.
